Knee replacement surgery, additionally referred to as knee arthroplasty, helps relieve pain and restore function in severely damaged knee joints. At RNH Hospital, this procedure is expertly performed by Dr. Dilip Rathi.
The procedure involves cutting away damaged bone and cartilage from your femur, shinbone, and kneecap, and replacing it with an artificial joint (prosthesis) made of metal alloys, high-grade plastics, and polymers.
In determining whether a knee replacement is right for you, the orthopedic doctor assesses your knee’s range of motion, stability, and strength. X-rays help determine the extent of damage.

Anatomy
The knee is the largest joint in the body, and healthy knees are required to perform most everyday activities. It is made up of:
- Lower end of the femur (thigh bone)
- Upper end of the tibia (shin bone)
- Kneecap (patella)
The ends of these bones are covered with cartilage, a smooth substance that protects the bones and allows easy movement. The menisci act as shock absorbers between the bones.
Ligaments provide stability, and thigh muscles provide strength. The synovium produces fluid that lubricates the joint and reduces friction.
Disease or injury can disturb this balance, resulting in pain, weakness, and reduced function.
During the Procedure
At RNH Hospital, your knee will be placed in a bent position to expose all joint surfaces. After making an incision of about 6 to 10 inches, the surgeon moves the kneecap aside and removes the damaged surfaces.
The artificial joint components are then fixed into place. Before closing, the surgeon bends and rotates the knee to ensure proper function. The surgery typically lasts about 2 hours.
After the Procedure
After surgery, you will be monitored for 1–2 hours. Many patients can go home the same day, depending on their condition.

- Blood thinners and compression support may be used
- Breathing exercises and gradual activity increase are advised
A physiotherapist will guide you through exercises for recovery. After discharge, rehabilitation continues at home or a physiotherapy center.
